Tourette’s Awareness Month: Be Kind, It’s Not a Choice
Every year, from 15 May to 15 June, people take part in Tourette’s Awareness Month. This is a time to help everyone understand a condition called Tourette syndrome (TS).
The theme for 2026 is “No Choice.”
What is Tourette syndrome?
Tourette syndrome is a condition that affects the brain.
People with TS have tics. Tics are movements or sounds that happen suddenly.
For example, someone might:
blink a lot
make noises
move their head or arms
These tics are not done on purpose and are very hard to control.
This means:
People with Tourette’s do not choose their tics
But other people can choose how they react
That choice matters a lot.
Why does awareness matter?
Lots of people still misunderstand Tourette’s.
Some think it is funny or only about swearing, but this is not true.
In real life:
Tics can be tiring or painful
People may feel embarrassed or worried
Unkind reactions can make things worse
Because of this, some people with TS may feel left out at school or in their community.
What should we do instead?
Even though someone cannot stop their tics, you can choose your behaviour.
You can choose:
Kindness instead of laughing
Patience instead of staring
Understanding instead of judging
For example:
If someone makes a noise, don’t copy them
If they move suddenly, don’t make fun of them
Treat them the same as everyone else
Simple idea to remember
People with Tourette’s often say:
“I don’t choose my tics.”
“You can choose to be kind.”
How you can help
You can make a big difference by:
Learning about Tourette’s
Sharing what you know
Standing up for others
Being respectful and friendly
Even small actions can help someone feel safe and included.
Final thought
Tourette’s is something a person has, it does not define who they are.
Everyone deserves kindness and respect.
