Taking Action for Your Mental Health

Action in a circle

This year’s theme is "Action" – a reminder that while talking about mental health is important, real change happens when we do something about it.

Your mental health is about how you think, feel, and cope with life. Just like your body, your mind needs care too. Everyone has good days and tough days and that’s OK. What matters is what you do to look after yourself.

Why Mental Health Matters

When your mental health is strong, you can:

  • Feel more confident

  • Handle stress better

  • Enjoy time with friends and family

  • Try new things

When you feel low, worried, or angry, it can be harder to do these things. That’s why taking action is important.

Simple Ways to Take Action

Here are some easy steps you can try:

 Talk to Someone

You don’t have to deal with things alone.

  • Talk to a friend, family member, or trusted adult

  • Speak to a trusted adult e.g. youth worker or teacher

  • If talking feels hard, text or write it down

Remember: It’s okay to ask for help.

Name Your Feelings

Try to say what you are feeling.
For example:

  • “I feel worried”

  • “I feel sad”

  • “I feel angry”

Naming your feelings can help you understand them better.

Do Small Things You Enjoy

You don’t need to do big things to feel better. Try:

  • Listening to music

  • Drawing or writing

  • Going outside

  • Playing a game

Small moments can lift your mood.

Move Your Body

Moving helps your mind as well as your body.

  • Go for a walk

  • Dance in your room

  • Play sport

Even a few minutes can help.

Rest and Recharge

Sleep is important for your mental health.

  • Try to go to bed at a similar time each night

  • Put your phone away before sleep

  • Rest when you feel tired

Be Kind to Yourself

You are doing your best and that is enough.

  • Don’t talk to yourself in a harsh way

  • Treat yourself like you would treat a friend

  • It’s OK to have bad days

When You Need More Support

Sometimes feelings can get too big to manage alone.
If this happens:

  • Tell a trusted adult

  • Speak to a GP or support worker

  • Use support services (like a helpline or youth service)

Getting help is a strong and brave step.

Remember

  • You are not alone

  • Your feelings matter

  • Things can get better

  • There are people who care about you
