Unleash Your Voice: The UK Youth Parliament Calling for Wirral's Young Leaders

youth parliament

Are you a young individual with a burning desire to make a difference in the world?

The UKYP mirrors the structure of the adult UK Parliament but with a unique twist—it's entirely youth-led. Aimed at giving a voice to young people, the UKYP ensures that the thoughts and opinions of the young people are heard by local, regional, and national authorities, service providers, and other entities invested in the perspectives of the youth.

Becoming a Member of Youth Parliament (MYP): A Golden Opportunity

If you're intrigued by the prospect of becoming an MYP, brace yourself for an exhilarating journey. This role involves collecting and representing the views of your peers in Wirral on issues that matter to them, presenting these views at local, regional, and national levels.

MYPs serve a two-year term, during which they actively engage in a variety of activities, including training, meetings, presentations, campaigns, discussions, and debates. The role is driven by the passion to support and instigate positive changes for young people in Wirral.

Understanding the Structure of UK MYP: Your Local Impact

Each Local Authority (LA) in England represents a UKYP constituency, and Wirral is no exception. The number of MYPs in each area depends on the youth population. In Wirral, there are two UK MYP roles and two Deputy roles. These representatives play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the youth and decision-makers.

The Expectations and Commitment of an MYP

Being an MYP involves various responsibilities, such as meeting with Youth Voice groups, attending workshops, supporting local youth campaigns, and participating in broader local, regional, and national initiatives. The commitment includes 3 hours per week, holiday training, arranged meetings, and attendance at key events like the UK Members of Youth Parliament sitting at the House of Commons in 2024 and 2025.

To support MYPs in their roles, Wirral Borough Council provides dedicated lead workers, financial assistance for expenses, and assistance with establishing meetings with local councillors and officers.
