A WIRRAL filmmaker has been named as “one to watch” after her film about a space dog scooped an award.

Young filmmaking prodigies were celebrated at the 10th annual Moving Image Awards at a ceremony held at the British Film Institute on Monday, February 26.

Ruby Hagan, an Upton Hall School FCJ, pupil took home the One to Watch award for her film titled Laika, a short experimental animation detailing the life of one of the first creatures in space: "Laika the Space Dog".

The judges commended Ruby on her inventive animation style combining line drawing and painting to stunning effect.

Ruby said: “I was so shocked! I really didn’t think I was going to win – I even sat in the middle of theatre row because I didn’t think I’d be worrying about getting up. It has been such a gorgeous day; I’ve absolutely loved it.”

Categories this year included Best Short Film, Music Video, TV/Film Extract, Screenplay, One to Watch and Student Jury Prize.

Students, parents, and teachers from across the UK gathered at the event to celebrate the work of young directors, screenwriters, and producers.

The Moving Image Awards, which launched in 2014 in collaboration with the British Film Institute, recognises and celebrates the best moving image productions from students undertaking Eduqas qualifications in Film and Media across the UK.
